Our buildings are owned by and are the home of Manchester’s thriving Quaker community. The Friends’ Meeting Houses are a base for all sorts of Quaker activity …a hub for action towards social and economic justice and peace building; a night shelter for asylum seekers over the winter months; a ceilidh as part of Manchester Pride… and many, many other things.
This activity is guided by four areas of expression that Quakers, or Friends, as they are also known, have held dear for centuries. These are:
- Truth and integrity in all they do
- Striving for equality
- and bringing these things together, Peace
More recently, a fifth area has become just as important to Quakers: sustainability. Nationally, Quakers are committed to becoming a low carbon community. This is also one of the factors that led to the Meeting House on Mount Street being developed in 2012/13.
These values or ‘testimonies’ are important to all of us at Friends’ Meeting House! We can offer a peaceful venue for your event where you will be treated fairly and where you can be assured that any profit made will support Quaker charitable activity.
We strive to ensure that our Meeting Houses offer a valuable safe meeting place for many diverse groups. Any organisation or individual can apply to hire space within the Meeting House. All room bookings are reviewed by a group of Quakers who make sure that the nature of the group and the content of the meeting are not in conflict with Quaker values. You can read more about this in our Lettings Policy.
We also only provide Fairtrade and ethically sourced refreshments, recycle all of our waste and work to offer meeting and conferencing facilities within buildings that have a reduced carbon footprint.
